Painting Lessons: Oil & Acrylic

Learn to draw or paint even if you have never taken an art class. As a practicing artist, learn ways to make your drawings and paintings more accurate and more exciting! Students will work from subjects of their choice and will be encouraged to develop their own original styles to reach personal goals.

Portrait Painting & Sketching 

Learn how to create a portrait for the first time or enhance your existing skills.  A live model will be provided so that the structure of the head and face can be observed from life. We will go beyond line and detail to sculpt the illusion of form with paint, charcoal or pastels. Additional model fee $10 per class paid to instructor. Supply list available at registration.

Watercolor & Acrylic Painting

Learn to paint using each medium separately or in combination. Classes will include color theory, perspective, wet on wet, negative space and other techniques. There will be daily and group demonstrations, as well as, personal and group critiques. The class will encourage experimentation and developing your own style. Experience is helpful but not necessary.

New! Ceramics Class: High Fired Majolica*

Students will use a combination of techniques: coiling, slab building and throwing on the pottery wheel to produce a range of functional and artistic works of art. Colored metallic oxides or ‘under glazes’ are applied to unfired glazed pottery, which absorbs pigments like fresco. After glaze firing the surfaces are brilliantly colored and completely food safe and functional. 
1st 25 lb. bag of clay and glazes are included. Additional 25 lb. bag of clay including glaze and firing is $25.00 payable to the front desk. Additional optional lab time will be offered on Thursdays.

*Majolica pottery is a type of glazed jewel-toned pottery associated with Spain, Italy and Mexico. The process of making majolica includes applying a tin based glaze to a fired piece of earthenware, forming a white, opaque, porous surface on which a design is painted.

Canceled Classes

Many classes are canceled due to low enrollment. If you are interested in taking a class that has been canceled, please email the Recreation Division or call 561-630-1100 and put your name on a list to let us know that you are interested in that class. Once we have enough people to hold the class, we will try to restart that class.
