Forestry reviews environmental studies and development applications as applicable to determine preservation of environmental habitats in accordance with the city's Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations.

This includes establishing the quantity and quality of wetland and upland areas, presence of protected species of plants and animals, and the location of any historically significant sites. Through the land development review process, areas that are designated as protected preserves are determined. Forestry also monitors the maintenance and protection of preserved areas once they have been established. Some of these areas are accessible to the public.
