[ARCHIVED] Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion Prevention

May 1 is National Heat Stroke Prevention Day. With summer right around the corner, Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue has a few tips to prevent heat stroke and heat exhaustion during the upcoming sunny season:

•? Drink plenty of water and avoid outdoor activities in very high temperatures.

• Know the signs and symptoms.
Heat Stroke symptoms include very high body temperature, red, hot and dry skin (no sweating), rapid, strong pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, upset stomach, confusion, passing out.
Heat Exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, upset stomach or vomiting, and fainting.

• Cool the body by placing person in a cool (not cold) bath or shower and by moving into an air-conditioned room.
